IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge: which English test should a school student take?

By Michael Thompson - Head of Teaching Excellence; 15 years as an IB Coordinator

In short: By destination and age. For a UK or Dutch university at 17 or 18, IELTS Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced; for the US or Canada, TOEFL iBT, or IELTS and Duolingo where the university lists them; for a certificate at 13 to 16, Cambridge B2 First for Schools, because IELTS is not recommended under 16. Cambridge certificates never expire; IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo and PTE results count for two years. None of the tests is 'easier': they measure the same CEFR levels in different formats.

Parents ask us this question more than any other, usually in the form 'which one is easier'. The honest answer is that the three main tests report the same CEFR levels and are accepted by largely the same universities, so the choice is about fit: where the student is applying, how old they are, which format suits them, and whether a result that expires after two years is a problem.

This guide compares IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT and the Cambridge exams B2 First and C1 Advanced, with Duolingo and PTE Academic as the two alternatives that come up, using the providers' own pages and the requirements pages of Warwick, King's College London and VU Amsterdam as read on 17 October 2026. Before reading on, check whether a test is needed at all: our guide on IB, Abitur and Matura grades covers that.

The short version, by situation

SituationUsual choiceWhy

A certificate at age 13 to 16Cambridge B2 First for SchoolsIELTS is not recommended under 16; B2 First for Schools is built for this age and the certificate lasts
Strong student, two years before applyingCambridge C1 AdvancedNo expiry, so it can be done early; grade A reports C2

What each test feels like

IELTS Speaking is an 11 to 14 minute conversation with a human examiner, which some teenagers find reassuring and others find intimidating. TOEFL Speaking is recorded into a microphone with no human present, and the whole test is on screen; its Reading and Listening now adapt to the student's answers, so two candidates see different questions. Cambridge Speaking is done in pairs, with a long turn and a collaborative task, which rewards students used to classroom discussion. Cambridge also tests grammar and vocabulary explicitly in Use of English; IELTS and TOEFL test them only through the other skills.

Paper versus computer matters less than families expect: IELTS and Cambridge offer both, with the same content and scores, and the centre decides what is on offer. TOEFL is computer-only.

Validity and timing

The two-year rule shapes the calendar. IELTS recommends that organisations accept a result for two years from the test date, TOEFL, Duolingo and PTE results are treated the same way, and universities apply the rule when the application is assessed, not when the course starts. For a university application in the final school year, that means sitting IELTS or TOEFL in that year or the one before, not at 15.

Cambridge certificates have no expiry date. A student who takes C1 Advanced at 16 still holds a valid certificate at 18, subject to any recency rule the university sets. That is the strongest argument for the Cambridge route for students who want the test done early, and it is why German, Austrian and Swiss schools build B2 First and C1 Advanced into the upper years.

Is one of them easier?

No. All three providers map their scores to the CEFR, and universities set their thresholds from those mappings, so the level required is the same whichever test the student sits. What differs is the format. A student who writes well but speaks hesitantly may score higher on Cambridge, where Speaking is one of four papers and partly collaborative; a student who reads fast and types well may prefer TOEFL; a student who likes talking to an adult may prefer IELTS. The diagnostic in our first lesson uses sections from each test for exactly this reason.

Be wary of claims that a particular test is 'easy to score high on'. Universities notice when a test inflates, and they adjust thresholds or drop the test; King's College London does not list Duolingo and VU Amsterdam states it does not accept it.

Duolingo and PTE Academic

  • Duolingo English Test: about one hour, online at home, scored 10 to 160, about US$70 according to secondary sources, results valid two years. Accepted by Warwick (110 to 130 by band) and by US boarding schools such as Andover, Hotchkiss and Midland. Not listed by King's College London; VU Amsterdam states it is not accepted. Not a UK visa test. Use it only when every university on the list names it.
  • PTE Academic: a two-hour computer test at a centre, scored 10 to 90, accepted by over 4,000 universities per Pearson, valid two years, and it cannot be taken at home. It is common for Australia and accepted by many UK universities; for students from German-speaking countries it rarely adds anything over IELTS.

Frequently asked questions

Which test is cheapest?
Duolingo, at about US$70 according to secondary sources, then Cambridge at school rates (€229 for B2 First, €239 for C1 Advanced at the Stuttgart centre we checked), then IELTS from €286 and TOEFL at about US$280. Cambridge is the best value over time because the certificate never expires.
Can my 14-year-old take IELTS?
Centres say IELTS is not recommended under 16, and the result would expire before a university application anyway. At 13 to 16 the sensible certificate is Cambridge B2 First for Schools; strong students can take C1 Advanced at 15 or 16.
Do universities prefer one test?
Not among IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge C1 Advanced: the universities we checked list all three with equivalent thresholds. Preferences show at the edges: LSE does not list school qualifications and wants IELTS 7.0 in every component or an equivalent; King's and VU exclude Duolingo.
What changed with TOEFL in 2026?
From 21 January 2026 the Reading and Listening sections are adaptive, the headline score runs from 1 to 6 with the old 0 to 120 score shown alongside during a transition, and results arrive within 72 hours. Requirements written as 'TOEFL 90' refer to the old scale; translate them before setting a target.
Can I combine results, for example IELTS Writing with Cambridge Speaking?
No. Each university requires one test's result with all components from one sitting, or with IELTS's One Skill Retake for a single component within the same test. Choose one test and prepare all its parts.
How should we decide?
List the universities or schools, open each one's English requirements page, and note which tests and scores it accepts for your course band. If IELTS and Cambridge both appear and the student has time, Cambridge C1 Advanced saves a retake later; if the application is this year, IELTS is faster to book. For North America, TOEFL. Then let the first lesson's diagnostic confirm the format fit.
