English tutoring

English tutoring for international students aged 11 to 19

In short: IB Doctor teaches English 1-to-1 online to students aged 11 to 19 who need it for school, for a certificate or for an application: MYP and IGCSE English, Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced, IELTS and TOEFL, and English for boarding school entry. Lessons last 60 minutes, are booked in bundles from £52.50 an hour, and the tutor is matched to the exact course.

Families who move between countries meet English at every step: a child joins an international school and has to follow lessons in English within weeks, a teenager wants a Cambridge certificate for university, a Gymnasium pupil applies to a boarding school in England or the United States and is asked for a test score. These are different jobs, and we treat them as different courses with different tutors.

Everything runs online in live 60-minute lessons with a shared whiteboard, in your time zone, in English or with explanations in German where that helps. You tell us the goal and the deadline; we match a tutor who teaches that course, not a generalist.

Which course is right for your child?

Start from the situation, not the exam. Each card leads to the course page with the facts, the typical number of hours and the price.

Starting at or settling into an international school

Ages 11 to 16 in the IB Middle Years Programme or on a Cambridge IGCSE track, including students who arrive with little English.

Applying to a boarding school abroad

UK, US and Swiss boarding schools test English on entry, at 11+, 13+ and 16+, with UKiset, their own papers and interviews.

Taking a Cambridge certificate at school

B2 First (for Schools) and C1 Advanced, the certificates German, Austrian and Swiss schools build into the upper years. They never expire.

Applying to university in English

IELTS Academic for the UK and the Netherlands, TOEFL iBT for North America. First check whether a school grade already counts instead.

IB Diploma English A or English B

The IB courses themselves, Literature, Language and Literature and English B, taught by IB English teachers and examiners.

How it works

  1. 1

    Tell us the goal

School, exam or application, the date, and the current level if you know it. Two minutes on the contact form or WhatsApp.

  2. 2

    We match the tutor

A tutor who teaches that exact course, usually within 24 hours on weekdays. You see the profile before the first lesson.

  3. 3

    Level check and plan

The first lesson starts with a short diagnostic, then a plan: what to cover, how many hours, what to practise between lessons.

  4. 4

    Lessons and progress

Live 60-minute lessons in your time zone, homework between them, and a short written note after each block so parents can follow.

Prices

English courses use the same bundles as every IB Doctor subject. Hours never expire within the bundle and can be shared across courses, so a sibling or a second exam can use the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need an English test at all?
Often not. Many UK and Dutch universities accept a good school grade in English instead of IELTS: Warwick, King's College London and Manchester publish Abitur thresholds, VU Amsterdam accepts the Abitur with English as an exam subject, and IB English A or B at set grades counts at most of them. LSE does not list the Abitur. UK boarding schools test English themselves rather than asking for IELTS, and the UK Child Student visa has no English requirement. Our guide walks through the checks.
Is this group teaching or one-to-one?
One-to-one only. Every lesson is a live video call between your child and the tutor, 60 or 120 minutes long, with a shared whiteboard and the materials for that course.
How many hours will we need?
It depends on the gap between the current level and the goal. Exam technique for a student already near the target level takes about 10 hours; moving up a level or preparing a school entry from scratch takes 20 hours or more over a term. Each course page gives the typical range, and the first lesson's level check turns that into a plan.
Can my child start before we move?
Yes. Lessons are online, so a child can start in the current country and continue after the move with the same tutor. Families use the summer before a school change for a 10- or 20-hour block.
Who are the tutors?
Experienced English teachers and exam preparers. For MYP, IGCSE and IB courses we match teachers who know that curriculum; for IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge we match tutors who prepare students for that specific exam. Every tutor is verified before teaching on IB Doctor.
Do you also teach German?
As an IB subject, yes: IB German A, German B and ab initio have their own pages. We do not offer German courses for adults or general German for expats.
