By Michael Thompson - Head of Teaching Excellence; 15 years as an IB Coordinator

Published 5 October 2026Data: IB Diploma Programme provisional statistical bulletin, May 2026

Short answer: In May 2026, IB Digital Society students averaged 4.4 at HL (1,160 students) and 4.5 at SL (1,284). 2.3% of HL and 3.1% of SL students scored a 7, and the most common grade at both levels was 5.

This page summarises IB Digital Society results for the May 2026 session. The figures come from the IB's official statistical bulletin for that session. They are provisional, and a final version of the bulletin follows later in the year.

In May 2026, 1,160 candidates sat Digital Society at HL and 1,284 at SL. Below we look at what the mean grades and grade distributions say about how the subject is scored, how HL and SL compare, and how results moved against May 2025.

Mean grade and distribution

The mean grade was 4.4 at HL and 4.5 at SL. In both levels the middle grades dominate. At HL, grade 4 accounts for 31% of all candidates and grade 5 for 31.4%, so more than half of HL candidates landed on one of those two grades. At SL, grade 4 stands at 28.9% and grade 5 at 31.5%. The percentages are shares of all candidates, and each level's shares sit slightly under a full total, because the remainder received no grade. The subject therefore produces a fairly compact, centred spread rather than a lopsided one.

HL compared with SL

The two levels are close. SL has a marginally higher mean grade (4.5 against 4.4) and slightly larger shares at the top: grade 5 at 31.5% against 31.4%, grade 6 at 15.9% against 14%, and grade 7 at 3.1% against 2.3%. HL has slightly larger shares at grades 2, 3 and 4 (4.6%, 15.1% and 31%, against 3.7%, 14.1% and 28.9% at SL). Grade 1 is rare at both levels, at 0.3% for HL and 0.4% for SL. These are comparisons of shares, not head counts. The gap may reflect who chooses each level or how candidates prepare, but the bulletin does not tell us why.

Change since May 2025

At HL the mean grade was 4.4 in May 2025 and is 4.4 in May 2026, so it is unchanged. At SL it rose from 4.3 in May 2025 to 4.5 in May 2026. That means SL moved ahead of HL on the mean, whereas in May 2025 HL was slightly ahead. One session is a limited basis for a trend, so treat this as a snapshot rather than a pattern.

What this means for choosing and preparing

Mean grades of 4.4 at HL and 4.5 at SL suggest that Digital Society is not an easy source of high grades. Grade 7 was reached by 2.3% of HL and 3.1% of SL candidates, so top marks are achievable but uncommon. For subject choice, the near-identical HL and SL distributions suggest the decision is better made on interest, workload and university requirements than on expected grade. For preparation, aiming to move from the large grade 4 and 5 bands into grade 6 means practising analysis and application of concepts in real-world contexts, and treating coursework seriously from the start. The session-wide diploma mean of 30.9 points is only background and says nothing about this subject.

Key takeaways

  • May 2026 mean grade: 4.4 at HL and 4.5 at SL (provisional bulletin figures).
  • Grades 4 and 5 are the two largest bands at both levels: 31% and 31.4% at HL, 28.9% and 31.5% at SL.
  • Grade 7 was awarded to 2.3% of HL and 3.1% of SL candidates.
  • HL stayed at 4.4 from May 2025, while SL rose from 4.3 to 4.5.
  • The levels are close in outcome, so choose on interest and university requirements rather than expected grade.

Frequently asked questions

What was the mean grade in IB Digital Society in May 2026?
The mean grade was 4.4 at HL and 4.5 at SL, according to the IB's provisional bulletin for May 2026. In May 2025 the means were 4.4 at HL and 4.3 at SL.
Is HL Digital Society graded harder than SL?
The results are very close. HL had a mean of 4.4 and SL of 4.5, and SL had slightly larger shares at grades 5, 6 and 7. The bulletin does not explain the gap, so it should not be read as proof that one level is marked harder.
How many candidates got a 7 in Digital Society in May 2026?
A grade 7 went to 2.3% of HL candidates and 3.1% of SL candidates. These are shares of all candidates at each level, based on the provisional bulletin.
