Mean grade and grade distribution

The mean grade of 4.8 sits between a 4 and a 5. The distribution is weighted towards the upper middle. Grade 5 is the most common result at 23.9%, followed by grade 4 at 21.9% and grade 6 at 17.3%. Grade 7 was awarded to 15.3% of candidates.

The lower grades are much less common: 12.7% received a 3, 6.2% a 2 and 1% a 1. These percentages are shares of all candidates, and together they do not reach the full total because the remainder received no grade. Grades 5, 6 and 7 together cover 23.9%, 17.3% and 15.3% of candidates, which is more than half, so a majority finished at 5 or above.

HL vs SL

Only SL appears in the May 2026 data for Japanese ab initio. There is no HL entry, so no HL and SL comparison can be made, and we do not infer anything about an HL level. Ab initio subjects are designed for students starting the language from scratch, which may explain why the data shows a single level, but the bulletin figures alone do not tell us that.

Change compared with May 2025

The SL mean grade in May 2025 was 4.8, and it is 4.8 again in May 2026, so the mean did not change. Individual grades did move: grade 6 fell from 21.3% to 17.3% and grade 4 rose from 17% to 21.9%, while the share of 7s was almost unchanged (15.4% and 15.3%). For context, the mean diploma total across the whole May 2026 session was 30.9 points. That figure covers all subjects and core points, so it says nothing about this subject on its own.

What this means for choosing and preparing

A mean of 4.8 with 15.3% of candidates at grade 7 suggests that high grades are reachable in this subject. The 502 candidates are a fairly small group, though, and a mean is only a summary. Individual results depend on starting point, study habits and how much contact with Japanese a student has outside school.

For preparation, consistent work across all skills can move a result by a grade or more. Regular practice with the script and vocabulary, plus timed practice on past-style tasks, is a sensible plan. Students who also want to use the subject to strengthen their diploma total should plan a realistic weekly study routine from the start.

  • Grades 5, 6 and 7 together account for more than half of all candidates.
  • The SL mean was 4.8 in May 2025 and is 4.8 in May 2026, so it did not change.
  • No HL entry appears in the data, so there is no HL and SL comparison.
