Construct in IB exams: meaning and how to answer

In IB exams, construct means you present information in a diagram or another logically organised form. You build a graph, table, tree or diagram from the material given, and you follow the conventions of your subject's format.

Paraphrased from the command-term definitions in the IB Diploma Programme subject guides (International Baccalaureate Organization).

What construct asks you to do

Construct is a command term that asks for a product, not an explanation. You take the information you have been given and present it as a diagram or in another logically organised form. The result might be a diagram, a graph, a table or a tree, depending on the subject and the question. The examiner is checking whether you can organise material accurately and clearly.

Conventions carry the marks

Marks attach to conventions. That means labels, units, scales and the correct symbols for the format your subject uses. A drawing can look neat and still lose credit if an axis is unlabelled, a unit is missing or a symbol is wrong. Before you finish, check each convention against what a standard version of that diagram would contain.

Plan the layout, then transfer the data faithfully

Decide how the structure will fit the space before you start drawing, so the whole thing stays legible and does not run off the page. Then transfer the data exactly as given. A tidy diagram built on the wrong values earns little, so accuracy matters more than polish. Plan first, draw second, and check your values against the question at the end.

Reproduce the standard format

Where your subject has a standard format, use it. A market diagram, a decision tree and a results table are examples of formats with an accepted layout. Reproduce that layout rather than inventing your own. Practising the standard versions until they are automatic leaves your attention free for the data in the question.

Where it appears

Economics

A market diagram is a standard format in economics. When a question says construct, build it with the conventions economics expects: labelled axes, labelled curves and values taken from the question.

Business Management

A decision tree is a standard business management format. Construct it logically from the information given, label each part clearly and transfer the figures from the question exactly.

Mathematics AI

In mathematics AI, construct points to a graph, table or other organised form built from the data supplied. Choose sensible scales, label the axes with units where relevant and plot the values faithfully.

Biology

A results table is a standard biology format. When asked to construct one, organise the data logically, give headings with units and record the values as given rather than adjusting them.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing a quick sketch with no labels, units or scales, then losing marks for missing conventions.
  • Transferring the data carelessly, so the diagram looks tidy but shows the wrong values.
  • Improvising a layout when your subject has a standard format such as a market diagram, decision tree or results table.
  • Starting to draw without planning, so the structure runs out of space and becomes hard to read.
  • Writing a paragraph of explanation when the command term asks for a diagram or other organised form.

Frequently asked questions

What does construct mean in IB exams?
It means presenting information in a diagram or another logically organised form. You build something like a graph, table or tree from the material given, using the conventions of your subject.
Do I need to write an explanation when the question says construct?
The command term asks for the diagram or organised form itself. Focus on building it accurately, with correct labels, units, scales and symbols, unless the question separately asks for more.
Where do the marks come from in a construct question?
Marks attach to conventions such as labels, units, scales and the correct symbols, and to transferring the data faithfully. A neat diagram with wrong values earns little.
How is construct different from sketch, determine and calculate?
These are separate command terms, and each has its own page on this site. Read them side by side so you answer with the product each one actually asks for.
