By Michael Thompson - Head of Teaching Excellence; 15 years as an IB Coordinator

Published 5 October 2026Data: IB Diploma Programme provisional statistical bulletin, May 2026

Short answer: In May 2026, IB French B students averaged 5.1 at HL (3,422 students) and 5.1 at SL (12,705). 16.5% of HL and 12.6% of SL students scored a 7, and the most common grade was 6 at HL and 5 at SL.

This page summarises IB French B results for the May 2026 session. The figures come from the IB's official statistical bulletin for that session. They are from the provisional bulletin, and a final version follows later in the year.

The bulletin covers 3,422 Higher Level (HL) candidates and 12,705 Standard Level (SL) candidates. Below we look at what the mean grade and the spread of grades say about how the subject is scored, how HL and SL differ, and how results compare with May 2025.

Aiming for a 6 or 7 in French B?French B tutoring

Mean grade: the same at HL and SL

Both levels have a mean grade of 5.1 in May 2026. On the 1 to 7 scale, the typical French B candidate therefore finishes around a grade 5. The identical means do not mean the two levels look the same underneath, because the shape of the distribution differs (see the next section). A mean also hides the range of outcomes, so it is best read together with the grade distribution.

Grade distribution: where HL and SL differ

All percentages are shares of all candidates at that level, and a small remainder received no grade. At HL, grade 6 is the most common result at 28.2%, followed by grade 5 at 23.6% and grade 7 at 16.5%. At SL, grade 5 is the most common at 30.9%, followed by grade 6 at 25.2% and grade 4 at 20.1%. The share earning a 7 is 16.5% at HL and 12.6% at SL. HL also has a larger share at the lower end: 11.6% receive a grade 3 (7.6% at SL) and 3.1% a grade 2 (2.2% at SL). Grade 1 is rare at both levels, at 0.1%. SL results are bunched more tightly around grade 5, while HL results are more spread out, with larger shares at both the top and the lower-middle of the scale. These are shares, not head counts: SL has far more candidates in total. Why HL is more spread out is not something the bulletin explains. One possibility is that the HL group is a different mix of candidates, for example with more students who already use French at home or at school.

Change since May 2025

At HL the mean grade moved from 5.2 in May 2025 to 5.1 in May 2026. At SL it stayed at 5.1. These are small movements in a mean reported to one decimal place, so we would not read them as a real change in difficulty or in candidate quality. The HL dip shows at the top: the share of 7s fell from 19.5% to 16.5%, while grade 5 rose from 20.5% to 23.6%. At SL the shares barely moved; the share of 7s went from 13.2% to 12.6%. Because the May 2026 figures are provisional, the final bulletin may differ slightly.

What this means for choosing and preparing

Since the mean grade is 5.1 at both levels, choosing HL does not by itself signal a harder or easier route to a given grade. The wider HL spread suggests more depends on your starting level and consistency. HL had a larger share of 7s, while SL results cluster more tightly around grade 5. For preparation, a realistic target for a solid candidate is a 5 or 6. A 7 needs consistent accuracy and range across all assessed skills. Use past papers under timed conditions, build vocabulary for the course themes, and get regular feedback on your written and spoken work.
