Mean grade and grade distribution

The mean grade was 5.3 at HL and 5.2 at SL. At both levels, grade 5 is the largest single group: 44% of HL candidates and 37.5% of SL candidates. Grade 6 follows, with 31.7% at HL and 24.4% at SL. Grade 4 accounts for 16.3% at HL and 21.6% at SL. Grades 5, 6 and 7 together clearly cover well over half of the candidates at each level. The subject is therefore scored with most results in the upper middle of the scale, not at the extremes. No candidate received a grade 1 at either level.

HL compared with SL

The two means are close, but the shapes differ. HL is more concentrated: 44% sit on grade 5 and 31.7% on grade 6, and grades 1 and 2 are not present at all, with only 0.9% on grade 3. SL is more spread out. It has 1.2% on grade 2 and 3.4% on grade 3, but also a larger share on grade 7: 11.3% at SL against 6.9% at HL. These are shares of each level's candidates, not head counts, and the two levels differ in size. One possible explanation is that HL candidates are a more self-selected group, while SL covers a wider range of confidence and preparation. The data cannot confirm this.

Movement since May 2025

Both levels moved up compared with May 2025. The HL mean rose from 5.1 to 5.3, and the SL mean rose from 5.1 to 5.2. HL therefore moved slightly more. A single session cannot show whether this is a trend or normal year-to-year variation, particularly as the May 2026 figures are provisional and the cohorts are fairly small.

What this means for choice and preparation

German A: Literature does not look like a subject where a good grade is out of reach: grade 5 and above is where most candidates finish at both levels. For students with strong German who enjoy close reading and written analysis, HL is a realistic option. SL suits those who want a lighter literature load, and its higher share of 7s shows that top grades are achievable there too. For preparation, consistent practice in textual analysis and essay structure tends to be what separates a 4 from a 6 or 7. Frequently asked questions

Is German A: Literature harder at HL or SL?
The means are close: 5.3 at HL and 5.2 at SL in May 2026. HL results cluster on grades 5 and 6, while SL has a wider spread and a larger share of 7s (11.3% against 6.9%). Difficulty also depends on the extra HL content and your own strengths, which these figures do not measure.
Did grades improve compared with May 2025?
Both means were higher in May 2026. HL rose from 5.1 to 5.3 and SL from 5.1 to 5.2. Because the May 2026 data is provisional and one session is a small basis, treat this as a modest signal, not a firm trend.
