IB Environmental Systems & Societies Assessment Structure
Since May 2026, IB ESS has been assessed at SL and HL through Paper 1 (analysis and evaluation of data from an unseen case study), Paper 2 (short-answer and data-based questions, then structured essays with limited choice) and the individual investigation (IA). At SL the weightings are 25%, 50% and 25%; at HL they are 30%, 50% and 20%, and HL questions also expect insight from the three HL lenses.
Paper 1
External AssessmentA resource booklet presents data in different forms about a previously unseen case study. All questions are compulsory and ask you to analyse and evaluate that data.
Paper 2
External AssessmentSection A has short-answer and data-based questions. Section B has structured essay questions, with a limited amount of choice.
Individual Investigation (IA)
Internal AssessmentAn open-ended investigation of a research question you formulate, written up as a report of up to 3,000 words. Your teacher marks it and the IB moderates the marks.
Key Assessment Notes
- This structure applies to every exam session from May 2026 onwards, including November 2026, May 2027 and May 2028
- ESS used to be an SL-only course; HL was examined for the first time in May 2026
- Criterion B (strategy) is new: you explain a strategy that addresses your issue and the tensions between perspectives on it
- You may work in a small group and share a similar method, as long as your independent or dependent variable differs and your data is your own
- The collaborative sciences project is a required part of the course but is not one of the assessed components
