IB Geography Tutoring

One-to-one IB Geography tutoring at HL and SL: Paper 1 options, the Paper 2 core and infographic, HL Paper 3 essays and the 2,500-word fieldwork IA, with a verified tutor who scored 40+ IB points.

IB Geography rewards detailed case studies, clear structure and evaluation, and many students lose more marks on the extended answers than on knowledge. Your tutor helps you build and organise case studies for your options and the core, practise the 10-mark essays and the HL 12- and 16-mark questions against the IB markbands, read infographics quickly on Paper 2, and learn, from other investigations, how to plan fieldwork with a focused question and real primary data. Tutoring covers SL (two options) and HL (three options plus the global interactions extension).

Quick answer: IB Doctor offers 1-to-1 IB Geography tutoring for course content, each assessment component and coursework. Lessons follow the syllabus and assessment criteria, and the work stays your own. Review tutor verification, student results and methodology before booking.

IB Geography Assessment Structure

IB Geography is assessed by Paper 1 on the optional themes, Paper 2 on the SL/HL core (including an infographic section) and a fieldwork IA. HL students also sit Paper 3 on the global interactions extension. This is the guide first assessed in 2019, which applies to every session from November 2026 to May 2029.

Paper 1

External Assessment

SL: 1 hour 30 min | HL: 2 hours 15 min
Each option: a 10-mark structured question plus one 10-mark extended answer from a choice of two. SL 40 marks, HL 60 marks
Optional themes A to G, about 45 minutes per option

Geographic perspectives, global interactions: answer one question from a choice of three

HL: 1 hour
Part A 12 marks, Part B 16 marks; each question is based on one HL unit
Power, places and networks; human development and diversity; global risks and resilience

Internal Assessment

Internal Assessment
SL: 25%
HL: 20%

Fieldwork: one written report based on a fieldwork question and primary data (about 20 hours)

Maximum 2,500 words, marked by your teacher out of 25 and moderated by the IB
Criteria: fieldwork question and context (3), methods (3), quality and treatment of information (6), written analysis (8), conclusion (2), evaluation (3)

Key Assessment Notes

  • The fieldwork must be local in scale and based on primary information you collect
  • Teachers and moderators are told to stop reading an IA report after 2,500 words
  • Grade boundaries are set again for every exam session

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about IB Geography tutoring

Yes. Every tutor scored 40+ IB points and is verified, and you are usually matched within 24 hours. SL students study two optional themes and the core; HL students study three options, the core and the global interactions extension examined in Paper 3. Tell us your level and your school's options when you sign up so your sessions match your course.

Paper 1 covers your optional themes: for each option, a 10-mark structured question and a 10-mark extended answer, about 45 minutes per option (1 hour 30 minutes at SL, 2 hours 15 minutes at HL). Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes) covers the core: three structured questions, an infographic section and one 10-mark essay. HL Paper 3 (1 hour) is one two-part essay, worth 12 and 16 marks.

Yes. The IA is one written report of up to 2,500 words, based on a fieldwork question and primary data you collect at a local scale. It is marked out of 25 on six criteria, with written analysis worth the most (8 marks). Your tutor can help you test whether your question is workable and can explain, using other investigations, how to plan methods and sampling that produce enough data for a convincing analysis, choose statistical techniques and evaluate honestly. The report stays your own work, and feedback on your draft comes from your teacher.

All seven: freshwater, oceans and coastal margins, extreme environments, geophysical hazards, leisure, tourism and sport, food and health, and urban environments. Schools usually choose which options they teach, so tell us yours. For each option your tutor helps you build case studies and detailed examples that fit the guide's requirements and practise the 10-mark extended answers.

The top markbands reward answers that are specific to the question and its command term, use integrated, detailed examples and case studies, discuss other perspectives and the strength of the evidence, and reach a balanced conclusion. Many answers stay descriptive or one-sided. Your tutor marks your practice essays against the markbands and shows what moves an answer up a band.

Yes. Section B of Paper 2 gives you an infographic or other visual stimulus with structured questions worth 10 marks. Your tutor teaches a routine for reading the key, scale and trends, quoting figures from the source, and linking what you see to the core units, then practises it on past questions until it is quick.

In May 2026 (IB provisional statistical bulletin), 12.7% of the 5,229 HL candidates and 7.5% of the 4,724 SL candidates were awarded a 7. The mean grade was 5.3 at HL and 4.9 at SL, the same as in May 2025. Grade 5 was the most common result at both levels, so the step from a 5 to a 6 or 7 is where most students can gain.

The current guide was first assessed in 2019 and applies to every session from November 2026 to May 2029; no new Geography guide is announced for students starting in August 2027. That means seven optional themes, the three core units on global change, the HL extension on global interactions, and the 2,500-word fieldwork IA. Your tutor teaches to this guide and to the options your school has chosen.

Your final grade comes from a weighted total of your papers and the IA. The IB sets the boundaries for each grade after every exam session, so they move a little from year to year and differ between SL and HL. Any published table is a guide only. Your teacher can share the boundaries the IB publishes for recent sessions.

Yes, if it is focused. Short-term help usually means timed essays, tightening your case studies and practising infographic and data questions, then reviewing every lost mark. You buy a bundle of hours on the pricing page, are usually matched with a verified tutor within 24 hours, and have your sessions online.

We offer a first session guarantee. If you're not satisfied after your first session, we'll rematch you with a different tutor or give you a full refund.
