IB Extended Essay Tutoring

One-to-one online Extended Essay tutoring from tutors who scored 40+ IB points, built around the new criteria first assessed in May 2027. Your tutor coaches your research question, method, argument and reflection, and the essay stays entirely your own work.

From May 2027 the Extended Essay is marked out of 30 on five new criteria, and Discussion and evaluation now carries the most marks (8). Much of what decides your grade happens early: a research question you can answer in 4,000 words and a method that fits it. Your tutor works with you from topic to viva voce. Under IB rules only your school supervisor gives feedback on your draft, so your tutor never writes, edits or proofreads your essay.

Quick answer: IB Doctor offers 1-to-1 IB Extended Essay tutoring for course content, each assessment component and coursework. Lessons follow the syllabus and assessment criteria, and the work stays your own. Review tutor verification, student results and methodology before booking.

Assessment breakdown

IB Extended Essay Assessment Structure

From May 2027 the Extended Essay is a 4,000-word, externally assessed essay marked out of 30: Framework for the essay (6), Knowledge and understanding (6), Analysis and line of argument (6), Discussion and evaluation (8) and Reflection (4), which is marked only on a reflective statement of up to 500 words on the reflection and progress form (RPF). The IB turns the total into a grade from A to E, which combines with your TOK grade for up to 3 diploma points. The previous guide (34 marks) is used for the last time in the November 2026 session; from May 2027 every essay is marked on the new guide.

Key Assessment Notes

  • Criterion A, Framework for the essay (6 marks): your research question, research methods and structure
  • Criterion B, Knowledge and understanding (6 marks): relevant research materials, terminology and concepts
  • Criterion C, Analysis and line of argument (6 marks): analysis that produces findings, and an argument linking question, findings and conclusion
  • Criterion D, Discussion and evaluation (8 marks): the significance of your findings, and the strengths and limitations of your essay
  • Criterion E, Reflection (4 marks): marked only on your reflective statement of up to 500 words on the reflection and progress form (RPF)
  • Total 30 marks, turned into a grade from A to E; examiners do not read beyond 4,000 words, and you need at least a D to be awarded the diploma
  • Three reflection sessions with your supervisor are mandatory, and the last one is the viva voce, held after you hand in the final essay
  • The November 2026 session is the last one marked on the previous guide: 34 marks, with Criterion E (Engagement) based on the RPPF

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about IB Extended Essay tutoring

Your tutor teaches the skills the criteria reward and keeps you on schedule. Typical sessions cover narrowing a topic into a research question, choosing research methods, finding and evaluating sources, analysing evidence and building an argument that runs from question to conclusion. You also work through the IB's sample essays to see how examiners apply the criteria, and prepare for each reflection session with your supervisor. The decisions, research and writing stay yours.

No. The Extended Essay must be your own work, and the IB guide states that students may not receive help with the research, writing or proofreading of the essay beyond what their supervisor provides. An essay written, edited or proofread by someone else, or generated by AI and presented as your own, can be investigated as academic misconduct, which puts your whole diploma at risk. A tutor builds your skills so you can write a strong essay yourself.

Yes, as long as the help is about skills and not your essay text. Learning how to design a research question, evaluate sources or structure an argument is ordinary teaching. What the IB does not allow is outside help with researching, writing or proofreading the essay itself: your supervisor is the one person who reads and comments on your draft, and only once. Tell your supervisor you are working with a tutor, so authenticity is never in question.

The new guide, first assessed in May 2027, marks the essay out of 30 instead of 34. The criteria are now Framework for the essay (6), Knowledge and understanding (6), Analysis and line of argument (6), Discussion and evaluation (8) and Reflection (4). The RPPF is replaced by the reflection and progress form with one reflective statement of up to 500 words, and the World Studies EE becomes an interdisciplinary pathway. The November 2026 session is the last on the old guide; from May 2027 every essay uses the new one.

Your essay gets a grade from A to E. The IB combines it with your TOK grade in a points matrix worth up to 3 extra diploma points: an A in one with an A or B in the other gives 3, two Bs give 2, two Cs give 1, and two Ds give 0. An E in either the EE or TOK is a failing condition, so the diploma cannot be awarded however strong your subject grades are.

In the May 2025 session, 11.2% of the 100,907 Extended Essay candidates got an A, 28.3% a B, 41.4% a C, 17.9% a D and 0.7% an E (IB final statistical bulletin, May 2025). A grades varied by subject group: 14.3% in studies in language and literature, 14.5% in the arts and 8.9% in the sciences. These essays were marked on the previous guide.

The best time is before you fix your research question, because that choice shapes every criterion. The IB expects about 40 hours of work from you in total, with three to five hours of supervision. Tutoring can also start later, for help with analysis, evaluation or preparing for the viva voce. Sessions are online, so if your school expects research or writing over the summer holidays, you can keep working with your tutor wherever you are.

Yes. Tell us your subject during onboarding and we match you with a tutor for it, usually within 24 hours. For an interdisciplinary essay, your tutor helps you check that your two DP subjects genuinely work together and that the topic fits one of the IB's interdisciplinary frameworks. Interdisciplinary essays must be written in English, French or Spanish, and ESS and literature and performance can only be used for subject-focused essays.

Your tutor can explain what Criterion E rewards: reflection that is evaluative, uses specific examples and shows how you grew as a learner and can transfer your skills, rather than a diary of what you did. You can also rehearse explaining your decisions before each reflection session. The 500-word reflective statement must be written by you, and only your school supervisor can hold the reflection sessions and sign the RPF.

We offer a first session guarantee. If you're not satisfied after your first session, we'll rematch you with a different tutor or give you a full refund.
