How to apply
Applications are made online through the HHU application portal; postal documents are not accepted. Non-EU applicants to undergraduate programmes must submit a uni-assist preliminary review documentation (VPD) issued for HHU. EU/EEA applicants, Bildungsinländer and equivalent groups apply directly via the portal and upload their home-country certificates with a German, English or French translation. Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy first-semester applications go through Hochschulstart (EU/EEA applicants); non-EU/non-EEA applicants with a foreign entrance qualification may apply directly via the HHU portal for these.
Language requirements
- For German-language bachelor's/State Examination programmes, proof of German proficiency is required in addition to the university entrance qualification; the university publishes an overview of recognised language qualifications.
- For programmes taught in a language other than German, proof of proficiency in the language required for that programme must be submitted with the application.
- A university entrance assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung) certificate with at least the grade 'adequate' in German can serve as proof of German proficiency.
- Bildungsinländer and German nationals with a non-German entrance qualification do not have to submit proof of German proficiency (EU/EEA page).
Courses with restricted admission
- Medicine (national admission restriction, centralised procedure)
- Dentistry (national admission restriction, centralised procedure)
- Pharmacy (national admission restriction, centralised procedure)
Deadlines
- Summer semester, subjects with restricted admission: 15 January
- Winter semester, subjects with restricted admission: 15 July
Worth knowing
- The IB (International Baccalaureate) does not count as a German university entrance qualification, even if it was acquired in Germany.
- Applications are online only; no references or certificates sent by post are accepted, including IB Diplomas sent to the university by the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
- Non-EU applicants must contact uni-assist at least 8 weeks before the university's application deadline to obtain a VPD; a uni-assist assessment report alone is not sufficient.
- Non-EU citizens with an entrance qualification from an EU country need no VPD for unrestricted-admission subjects and subjects with national admission restrictions; they submit home-country certificates with a German, English or French translation instead.
- For restricted-admission subjects, non-EU selection criteria are nationality and the average grade shown in the VPD; TestAS, internships, references or waiting time are not considered.
- Documents can no longer be submitted after the deadline for subjects with restricted admission.
- Admission is usually valid only for the semester applied for and cannot normally be postponed.
- Applicants should check on the anabin database whether their home-country certificates entitle them to study in Germany.
- A Studienkolleg university entrance assessment test counts as an international (not German) entrance qualification.
