Studying at Ruhr-Universität Bochum with the IB

Applicants with foreign certificates apply online through the RUB application portal (RUB Bewerbungsportal) directly to the university, for all programmes, both admission-restricted and unrestricted. Required documents are uploaded during the online application; non-EU applicants must upload them by the application deadline.

• Bachelor/Staatsexamen programmes are mostly taught in German; only certain German language certificates are accepted, for example TestDaF with at least 16 points in a single sitting, DSH level 2 or 3, DSD II, Goethe-Zertifikat C2 (ZOP), KDS/GDS of the Goethe-Institut, ÖSD C1, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, or the German part of the Feststellungsprüfung.
• Some programmes may have additional language requirements that may have to be proven at enrolment.
• Purely English-taught Master programmes require no German proof but do require proof of English; accepted English certificates are listed on each programme's page.
• The bilingual Bachelor IT-Engineering (from winter semester 2025/26) requires one of the accepted German certificates at application and proof of English at B2 level (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL) at enrolment.

• Winter semester, Bachelor/Staatsexamen: online application from early May to 15 July.
• Winter semester, Master: online application from early June to 15 July.
• Summer semester: online application from early December to 15 January.
• Non-EU applicants must upload all documents by 15 July (winter semester) or 15 January (summer semester); upload is not possible after the deadline.
• Admission-free subjects can usually be applied to until the start of lectures.

• The university's admissions pages do not mention the IB Diploma, so IB acceptance and IB points are not stated.
• Applicants need a school certificate scan of the original with an officially certified translation into German or English.
• An APS certificate is required only for applicants with certificates from China, Vietnam or India.
• Applicants are told to check their email during the allocation procedure and to observe the enrolment deadline in the admission notice.
• EU citizens are treated the same as German applicants; an EU school or degree qualification also puts an applicant in the EU group.
• Admissions hotline offers advice in German and English: Mon-Thu 9-16, Fri 9-14.
