How to apply

German citizens holding an IB Diploma who want to apply for an undergraduate programme (bachelor or state examination) must first have the diploma recognised by a certificate recognition office (Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle). Applicants living in Baden-Württemberg or abroad, or whose federal state's ministry is not responsible, should contact the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart. Recognition certifies eligibility for admission to a German university and which subjects may be studied. These applicants follow the same application and admission rules as applicants with a German Abitur.

Language requirements

  • Applicants whose native language is not German must also take a German language test (e.g. DSH or TestDaF).
  • An IB Diploma (anglophone section) from an anglophone school is listed as accepted evidence of English proficiency at levels B1, B2 and C1.
  • Language requirements for individual degree programmes are set in each programme's selection statutes or admissions regulations; the university cannot check certificate acceptance in advance, outside the application phase.

Worth knowing

  • The page names the IB Diploma explicitly only for German citizens, who need it recognised by a certificate recognition office before applying.
  • In some cases a foreign qualification is not directly equivalent to a German university entrance qualification, so attendance at a Studienkolleg and a Feststellungsprüfung (assessment examination) are required.
  • The recognition process takes time, so certificates should be sent to the recognition office as early as possible.
  • For information on recognition of the IB Diploma, the page refers to the DAAD website.
  • The page does not state whether international (non-German) applicants with an IB Diploma are admitted directly, and it gives no minimum IB points or subject requirements.
