How to apply
Non-EU/EEA applicants and stateless persons applying for undergraduate programmes (Bachelor/Staatsexamen) apply fully online directly to Universität Göttingen through its application and upload portals. Documents sent by post or email are not considered. Applicants whose school qualifications do not give direct university access may be invited to the entrance test of the Studienkolleg Hannover instead.
Language requirements
- German language skills are generally required for applying to Universität Göttingen; the specific language requirements of the chosen degree programme apply.
- Only two undergraduate programmes are currently taught in English; English-language requirements for these are listed in the A-Z programme list.
Courses with restricted admission
- Some programmes are admission-restricted (zulassungsbeschränkt) because applications regularly exceed available places, so a selection procedure is held.
- Other programmes are open-admission (zulassungsfrei), admitting all applicants who are eligible for access.
Deadlines
- Application deadlines for applicants from non-EU/EEA countries end early compared with other universities, to allow time for a visa. First semester: admission-restricted programmes 1 March to 30 April (winter) or 1 September to 31 October (summer); admission-free programmes 1 March to 30 September (winter) or 1 September to 31 March (summer).
- Master's programmes: deadlines vary because each faculty runs its own procedure.
Worth knowing
- The university's admissions pages do not mention the IB Diploma, so IB acceptance and points are not stated.
- Eligibility for non-EU/EEA applicants depends on proving a direct higher-education entrance qualification (HZB). The International Student Office checks this using the assessments of the Zentralstelle für Ausländisches Bildungswesen, which are available in the anabin database.
- A one-time evaluation fee of 65 euros per application semester is charged for assessing foreign certificates, unless the applicant is exempt. The application is processed only after payment.
- Certificates not issued in German, English or French need a translation from an accredited translation office in addition to the originals.
- Applicants may apply for up to three admission-restricted programmes per semester.
- The Studienkolleg preparatory course lasts one year and ends with the Feststellungsprüfung; applicants must then apply a second time for a place at Göttingen.
- Undergraduate programmes (1-subject or 2-subject Bachelor) have a standard study duration of six semesters.
