Subject and level conditions
- German A (Higher or Standard Level): at least 6 points means no separate proof of German proficiency is needed.
- German B (Higher Level): at least 7 points means no separate proof of German proficiency is needed.
How to apply
Applicants who already hold the IB and are not German nationals use the regular application route for international applicants: a direct application through the online portal campo. Those who only obtain the IB in the current year usually cannot submit the final certificate by the deadline and may use a provisional-recognition procedure.
Language requirements
- Applications for Lebensmittelchemie, Medizin, Pharmazie or Zahnmedizin require proof of passing the DSH-2 German exam or an equivalent exam.
Courses with restricted admission
- Medizin, Medizin Erlangen-Bayreuth, Zahnmedizin, Pharmazie: applicants from EU/EEA states, Bildungsinländer, and certain foreign applicants living in Germany with EU/EEA family members working there must apply through the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (SfH).
- International Business Studies, International Economic Studies, Lebensmittelchemie, Molekulare Medizin, Psychologie: for winter semester 2026/27 certain applicant groups (e.g. EU nationals, Bildungsinländer) must apply through the DoSV procedure in addition to campo.
- Artificial Intelligence (B.Sc.): the application deadline for international applicants is 31 May.
Deadlines
- End of April of the exam year: IB applicants for admission-restricted (decentral NC) courses who want to meet the 15 July deadline must have submitted the listed documents to the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle by then, electronically as PDF files; nothing needs to be sent by post.
- 15 July: application deadline at Bavarian universities for admission-restricted courses; provisional IB documents are accepted at application and the final certificate is due at the latest at the start of lectures.
- Winter semester, admission-free Bachelor/Staatsexamen courses: 15.04. to 15.07. (Artificial Intelligence B.Sc. until 31 May).
- Winter semester, NC courses (1st semester): 04.05. to 15.07.
Worth knowing
- For admission-free subjects, the provisional IB Transcript of Records issued by the IBO is sufficient at application; the final certificate must be presented at enrolment.
- For restricted-admission applications, the following must reach the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle by end of April as PDF files (no post needed): copy of ID or passport, tabular school CV, German contact address, Year 10 report, and a school-issued subject and grade overview of all four IB semesters showing the Standard/Higher Level choices. FAU's own IB page still asks for these documents by post, but the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle, which receives them, accepts PDF files according to its information sheet dated September 2026.
- Applicants must also order an Official Transcript from the IBO (not the school), which the IBO sends online to the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle in early July when results are released.
- After receiving the transcript, the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle sends a notice for timely application to the contact address. The provisional recognition notice and IB grades can be attached to the application or submitted afterwards with a short note.
- With these provisional documents, enrolment is possible upon admission.
- Foreign certificates not issued in German, English or French need an officially certified copy and a certified translation.
- From winter semester 2026/27, applicants from non-EU countries pay an application fee of 100 euros per application.
- From summer semester 2027, tuition fees apply for some programmes for students from non-EU countries.
- Graduates of German schools abroad who earn the IB together with the DSD II language diploma apply via the procedure for international applicants.
