Subject and level conditions
- German as Language A in the IB Diploma with grade 6 or better exempts an applicant from submitting a separate German language certificate (C1 proof).
How to apply
Applicants apply directly to the University of Mannheim through its online application portal and upload documents there; the university does not work with uni-assist and no Vorprüfungsdokumentation (VPD) is needed. German applicants with an IB Diploma must submit the IB diploma plus a recognition document from a Department of Evaluation and Recognition for Certificates of Education (e.g. Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart), or a provisional recognition if they only have a transcript of grades. Applicants without German citizenship do not need recognition of their documents. Non-EU/EEA applicants without a German entrance qualification submit a copy of their qualification plus a German or English translation by a sworn translator.
Language requirements
- Proof of German proficiency at least level C1 of the CEFR is required for all bachelor's programs; none of the bachelor's programs is taught entirely in English.
- German as Language A in the IB Diploma with grade 6 or better counts as proof of German proficiency without a further certificate.
- Documents must be in German or English; documents in another language need a translation into German or English (certified or sworn translation, depending on the document).
- Proof of German proficiency must be received by the application deadline; it cannot be submitted afterwards.
- Proof of language proficiency (a separate Baustein) is required for the bachelor's programs Business Administration, Business Informatics, Culture and Economy: English and American Studies, and Current English Linguistics and Literary Studies.
Deadlines
- For bachelor's applications, the deadline by which proof of German proficiency at level C1 must be received is 15 July.
Worth knowing
- The IB Diploma must meet the criteria of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education (KMK) to be recognized as a university entrance qualification; the agreement of 15 June 2023 applies from 2025 and the one of 24 March 2022 applied until 2024.
- If the IB diploma is not available by the application deadline, applicants can apply with a provisional transcript of grades.
- If the IB diploma or transcript is not issued completely in English (e.g. course names in another language), a certified English translation must be submitted along with the originals.
- The recognition document must confirm equivalence to a German university entrance qualification and include a converted grade and the date of the qualification.
- If the qualification is not sufficient for admission, and the application is successful, the applicant is enrolled at the Studienkolleg Heidelberg.
- Grades from institutions outside Germany are converted using the modified Bavarian formula.
- Up to three applications can be submitted for the first semester of selective bachelor's programs.
- Proving foreign language skills (e.g. English) via school grades of the entrance qualification is only possible for German and EU/EEA qualifications.
