How to apply

Applicants with an International Baccalaureate (treated as an international higher education entrance qualification) generally must first request a VPD (preliminary review documentation) from uni-assist, then apply through the Freie Universität Berlin application portal within the university's application deadlines.

Worth knowing

  • The page lists an International Baccalaureate completed at an international school in Germany as an example of an 'international HZB' (higher education entrance qualification).
  • Whether a certificate counts as German or international depends on the type of school-leaving certificate, not on where the school is located.
  • The assessment of international certificates is determined by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) of the Kultusministerkonferenz.
  • The page points applicants to the DAAD admissions database, the anabin database (in German) and the uni-assist HZB page to check whether an international certificate qualifies for study in Germany.
  • International applicants whose certificate does not qualify them for university study in Germany can obtain a qualifying degree via the Studienkolleg.
  • The page states that the European Baccalaureate at a European School gives the general higher education entrance qualification, entitling the holder to study any subject.
