Language requirements

  • Most bachelor's programs and many master's programs are taught in German; some master's programs are taught entirely in English.
  • Applicants must show sufficient proficiency in the language of instruction of their chosen program, usually with a recognized language certificate.
  • Exemption from the German certificate: applicants with a bilingual International Baccalaureate that meets the KMK resolution on 'Bilingual International Baccalaureates at Foreign Schools with German Instruction' (version valid at enrollment).
  • Exemption from the German certificate: applicants holding a school-leaving qualification that grants higher-education admission in Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, German-speaking Belgium, or South Tyrol.
  • Exemption from the German certificate: applicants who completed a German-taught degree at a German university, including a university of applied sciences.
  • Exemption from the English certificate: applicants with a high school diploma or academic degree from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or the United States.
  • Citizenship alone, including German or English-speaking-country citizenship, does not grant an exemption from the language requirement.
  • TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted; the minimum TOEFL score must be reached in a single test session.
  • Only language tests whose results the test provider can verify are accepted; RWTH must be authorized as recipient of the results and test validity periods must be observed.
  • For doctoral studies, the supervisor decides whether a language certificate is needed.

Worth knowing

  • RWTH does not currently offer German courses for prospective students preparing for university study.
  • Non-EU applicants should note that a residence permit for learning German is generally limited to 12 months.
