Subject and level conditions

  • These requirements are for KIT's English-taught B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering (International) at the Carl Benz School of Engineering; KIT's German-taught bachelor's programmes are applied for separately, with their own rules and deadlines.
  • Applicants to the B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering (International) need one year of high school physics taken within the last 3 school years, or alternatively one of two tests: ACT International Subject Test Physics (at least 24 points) or TestAS with subject module Engineering (75 percentile required in the Engineering module).
  • IB applicants are exempt from proof of English proficiency if they can prove at least a grade 5 in the subject English.
  • Admission depends on the recognition and content of the school-leaving certificate, including the combination of subjects studied; outcomes can be direct admission, indirect admission, or no eligibility.

How to apply

Direct application via the KIT Application Portal for the B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering (International) at the Carl Benz School of Engineering; documents are uploaded as electronic PDFs.

Language requirements

  • English proficiency proof is not required for applicants who obtained an IB as university entrance qualification with at least a grade 5 in English.
  • Other applicants need English at CEFR level B2 or equivalent, shown by TOEFL (90 iBT), IELTS (band score 6.5, no section lower than 5.5), CAE, CPE, or UNIcert (Level II or better); Duolingo is not accepted.
  • A waiver is also possible with English as language of instruction in the last two years of schooling (Declaration of English Proficiency form) or a GCE A-level/AS-level grade of at least B in English.

Deadlines

  • Application deadline is April 30th each year; the portal opens on December 1st and decisions are not made until May.
  • Final admission decisions are communicated 2-3 weeks after the April 30th deadline.
  • The portal for the 2026/2027 winter semester closed on April 30th, 2026 and reopens in December 2026 for the 2027/2028 winter semester.
  • If admitted, all required final certificates must be submitted by the enrollment deadline in October at the latest.

Worth knowing

  • The IB Diploma is listed among accepted school-leaving certificates, alongside GCE/IGCE A levels, US High School Diploma and Turkish Lise Diplomasi plus ÖSYM/YKS.
  • Official transcript with grades from the last three completed school years is required; predicted grades cannot be considered.
  • Applicants still in school must upload a Confirmation of anticipated school-leaving certificate form.
  • One standardized test is required: SAT (minimum 1200 points), ACT (composite score of 24 points), or TestAS (percentile rank of 75 in the Core Test).
  • A motivation letter in English, on the provided template, is required; extracurriculars, work experience and awards are optional documents.
  • Applicants who do not fully meet entry requirements may be offered indirect admission and must pass the Assessment of Eligibility at the end of the eight-week Pre-Semester starting each August.
  • Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
  • Applicants from China, India and Vietnam need an APS certificate and are recommended to take TestAS instead of SAT or ACT; the APS requirement does not apply to students receiving IB, A-levels or US diplomas from international schools in those countries.
