How to apply

International applicants without German nationality generally apply to the International Office. In certain cases they must instead apply to the Office of the University Registrar (Studentenkanzlei) or the Foundation for University Admission (Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung). Applicants should check first which office is responsible for them. The application is made with the application form plus the required documents.

Language requirements

  • German: evidence of German proficiency must be submitted as an uncertified copy; this does not apply to master's, doctoral and double degree programs taught in English.

Deadlines

  • Summer semester, International Office application: 15 January (receipt by LMU)
  • Winter semester, International Office application: 15 July (receipt by LMU)
  • Selected master's programs via the MoveIN online portal: winter semester applications from 15 May until 15 July

Worth knowing

  • IB holders who have not yet received their final certificate need a recognition letter from the Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle für den Freistaat Bayern (ZAST).
  • The university admission qualification (generally Abitur or an equivalent school leaving certificate) must be submitted as an officially certified copy in the original language, with an officially certified translation. Certificates in English, French, Italian, Catalan, Latin, Portuguese, Rumanian and Spanish need no translation.
  • Applicants can check via Anabin or the DAAD database whether their school leaving certificate qualifies them for a degree program at a German university.
  • For subjects requiring an aptitude assessment, pre-registration or study orientation process, applicants must additionally apply in time via the respective institute.
  • An updated resume is required; expert reports, letters of recommendation and internship certificates are not required when applying to the International Office.
  • Applicants from the USA (without a bachelor's degree) and from Afghanistan should email the International Admissions office before the deadline so a ZAST recognition letter can be prepared; the office may require a ZAST recognition letter in other individual cases.
  • Applicants with certificates from the PR China, India and Vietnam should submit the certificate from the Akademische Prüfstelle bei der Deutschen Botschaft (APS).
