How to apply
Applicants with an IB Diploma who do not yet have a Notification of the Office for Certificate Recognition must apply to uni-assist for a preliminary documentation (VPD), and must also apply directly to TUM via TUMonline. A VPD application alone does not count as an application to TUM.
Deadlines
- VPD application at uni-assist for a Bachelor's program, winter semester: July 15
- VPD application at uni-assist for a Bachelor's program, summer semester: January 15
- Grace period for uploading the final VPD in TUMonline, summer semester (all applications): February 15
- Grace period for uploading the final VPD in TUMonline, winter semester (Bachelor applications): August 31
Worth knowing
- Applicants with an International Baccalaureate Diploma who do not yet have a Notification of the Office for Certificate Recognition need a VPD from uni-assist.
- Applicants with an International Baccalaureate Diploma who already have a Notification of the Office for Certificate Recognition do not need a VPD.
- For TUM, 'international' refers to where the secondary school was completed: outside Germany or with something other than a German Abitur.
- Not every secondary school diploma qualifies for university studies in Germany. A first check can be made via the DAAD admission database or the anabin database. Applicants without a qualifying diploma cannot apply directly for a Bachelor's but may qualify via Studienkolleg.
- A VPD tells applicants whether they qualify for all subjects (general qualification) or only certain subjects (subject-restricted qualification), and converts grades into the German or ECTS grading system.
- A VPD must be applied for as 'all degree courses' for the first subject semester, not for a specific program.
- Uni-assist usually needs about 4 to 6 weeks to process a VPD.
- A VPD is accepted at TUM for 3 years after issuance, provided the entrance qualification and the admission requirements have not changed.
- TUM does not accept a VPD that was applied for at another university.
- International students from outside the EU and EEA generally pay tuition fees at TUM; scholarships and waivers are available.
- Proof of German and/or English language skills is required, depending on the degree program.
- Authentic documents proving school education must be uploaded to TUMonline for application and enrollment.
