How to apply

The IB Diploma counts as an international diploma. Applicants with an international secondary school certificate apply via the uni-assist portal (My assist), uploading all documents by the deadline; documents must be in the original language with a certified German or English translation (English documents need no translation). EU/EEA applicants to Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology and Veterinary Medicine apply through the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung.

Language requirements

  • Degree programmes taught in German require German proficiency equivalent to DSH-2; accepted certificates include DSH-2, TestDaF (TDN4 in all categories), DSD II, Goethe Certificate C2, Feststellungsprüfung, interDaF C1 level 2, ÖSD C2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, or the German Abitur.
  • For almost all German-taught programmes, a German certificate at B2 (CEFR) is enough at the time of application; a recognised German certificate must be submitted at the latest at enrolment.
  • For Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology and Veterinary Medicine, proof of the required German skills must be submitted at the latest by the application deadline.
  • Programmes taught in English require English at B2 level (CEFR); specific requirements are in the courses of study overview.
  • Some programmes may require additional foreign language skills, listed in the courses of study overview.

Courses with restricted admission

  • Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology and Veterinary Medicine have admission restrictions and special procedures; non-EU/EEA applicants are allocated 5 percent of the places in these programmes.
  • Other programmes with admission restrictions allocate 10 percent of places to non-EU/EEA applicants.
  • Whether a programme has admission restrictions is shown in the courses of study overview.
  • Some programmes may require an aptitude test; see the overview of aptitude tests.

Deadlines

  • Winter semester, programmes with admission restrictions, via uni-assist: beginning of April to 15 July.
  • Summer semester, programmes with admission restrictions: beginning of November to 15 January.
  • Winter semester, programmes without admission restrictions, via uni-assist: beginning of April to 1 September.
  • Summer semester, programmes without admission restrictions: beginning of November to 1 March.
  • Aptitude test dates may fall before the application deadlines.

Worth knowing

  • The page states that the IB Diploma counts as an international diploma but does not explicitly state an IB acceptance decision or minimum points.
  • Applicants need a direct higher education entrance qualification (HZB), which can be checked in the Anabin or DAAD admission database.
  • For many subjects the HZB mark is an important selection criterion; TestAS with excellent results in both modules can improve it by up to 0.4 points.
  • For admission-restricted programmes, non-EU/EEA applicants are selected mainly by HZB mark, then by citizenship (typically one place per country of origin), with a lottery number as tiebreaker.
  • A maximum of two programmes can be applied for at once, only one of which may be without admission restrictions.
  • Programmes without admission restrictions admit all applicants who meet the formal requirements and apply on time.
  • Most programmes are taught in German; a few are taught in English.
