Language requirements

  • Applicants to German-language degree programmes must show sufficient German skills, usually at DSH-2 level; some programmes require a lower level (DSH-1) or a higher one (DSH-3).
  • Applicants to a German-language programme must take a language test at the start of their studies to show their German is sufficient.
  • Language requirements for English-taught programmes are listed on the individual programme webpages.

Worth knowing

  • The IB is not recognised as a German Abitur but is treated as a foreign secondary school-leaving certificate.
  • A foreign secondary school-leaving certificate must be recognised as equivalent to a German university entrance qualification.
  • Equivalence of a foreign certificate can be checked in the DAAD admission database or the Standing Conference of Education Ministers database.
  • If a certificate is not recognised as equivalent, applicants may have to pass a Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test); a Studienkolleg can prepare for it, but the University of Münster does not offer one.
  • Applicants whose certificate is not recognised but who have studied at a university in their home country may under certain conditions be granted a (subject-specific) entrance qualification by German officials.
  • The databases also show whether a foreign qualification allows application to all subjects or only certain subjects at German universities.
